INFO 300 ASu 25: Research Methods

For your project this quarter, you will be conducting a lightweight research project using both qualitative and quantitative methods. For this assignment, you'll be picking a research question to tackle.

A few guidelines to help you:

You should ask a question related to humansubjects research. Since you will primarily be using your classmates as participants, you should consider questions that you could answer using a sample of UW students. Your question does not need to be related to UW or the college experience, but it does need to be answerable given this sample.

Your question should follow the best practices described in reading and lecture. That is, it should be well-defined, clear and focused, rich, original, and interesting.

When brainstorming a question, you should consider drawing from your personal experiences, knowledge, values, and interests. Have you taken any interesting classes lately? Have you had any difficult or unusual experiences? Have you read anything in the news or in a book that you want to investigate?

Note that for the project, you will be tackling this research question in both a quantitative way (an experiment/survey) and a qualitative way (an interview study), so consider in advance whether your question would lend itself well to both of these methods.

For this submission, please provide the following:

Aresearch question

A 1-2 paragraph justification of that question, that answers the following questions:

o What makes this a good research question? Consider potential impact, interesting-ness, the quality of definition, etc

o How could you answer this question by collecting data from UW students?

o What, if any, potential challenges do you foresee in trying to answer this question? Logistic challenges? Theoretical challenges?
