GROUP PROJECT GUIDELINES
About the group
Please form a team of 5 people and nominate a team leader.
The team leader will do the following:
a. Email to Ms. LI Xinlu Elsie ([email protected]) the group list containing group member names, student IDs, and your selected bank before 20 September;
b. Submit the presentation PPT on the same day before your presentation via Moodle; and
c. Submit the written report (PDF file) before 28 November via Moodle Turnitin.
Content of the project
1. Choose one bank failures happened in the past (e.g. in the US or elsewhere). You may choose among any large bank failures in recent years (either in the table below or other bank failures will also be allowed). FIRST COME FIRST SERVE - No more than 1 group can choose the same bank.
2. Write a report on the analysis of the bank failure you choose and deliver an oral presentation in the class after the completion, based on what you learnt during the lessons.
3. A single bank’s failure can have serious consequences and impacts on the entire financial market. Other financial institutions may be adversely affected and other businesses also suffered serious setbacks. Your report is to critically evaluate the background of the financial institution involved, its risk management issues or problems, the details of the failure and the related consequences, impacts and lessons learnt, using the concepts learned throughout the course. You need to present arguments derived from data or facts to support your opinions.
4. You will use the following for your further analysis:
i. the information from the news, or other references on the Internet; or
ii. the annual reports of the banking institution; or
iii. the information from market regulators and their related information from the firm’s website.
(Remember: DO NOT copy and paste directly from sources. You must write in your own words and properly reference the information you obtained.)
5. Suggested Content:
i. The analysis is advised to include (but is not limited to) the following sections and try to answer some of the questions as below:
a. Introduction
What is the role of the financial institution in the financial system and its business nature? Why analysing this case is important or interesting? What possible major risks may be faced by this financial institution and how do they compare to its bank peers?
b. Background and Evaluation of the financial institution
Describe the history, governance structure, regulatory environment, operating activities and businesses, and other important aspects of the bank.
c. Discussion of the Risk Management issues of the financial institution
Describe and analyse its failure in risk management. What were the theoretical underpinnings of the case? What were the general practices of risk management before the failure? What were the consequences and what impacts the failure triggered on other sectors of the economy? Whether preventing the failure would have been possible with successful risk management?
d. Conclusion
Summarize your analysis. As a bank manager or regulator, what are your constructive recommendations to the risk management of the financial institutions?
About the grade
The group project contains both a written report and an oral presentation. The written report will be graded at the group level (i.e., each group member receives the same score). The oral presentation will be graded at individual level (i.e., each group member receives a different score.)
1. The written report
i. Each report must have Turnitin similarity score below 20%. Marks will be deducted if it is higher than the 20% threshold. You may get ZERO marks for high similarity scores.
ii. Page limit is 22-page including the cover page and reference.
iii. The cover page should include the section number, the name and student ID of each group member.
iv. Font requirement: Times New Roman, 12pt, and 1.5 line spacing.
v. Every cited content must be included in the Reference List.
2. The oral presentation
