Assessment Task

For this assessment you will practise a mind-mapping strategy to paraphrase a written text to demonstrate your understanding of the role of paragraph structure in the effective communication of knowledge and meaning.

Context

In addition to the words themselves, the structure of a paragraph of writing is critical to its effectiveness in communicating your understanding of a topic.

The most effective way to communicate your understanding of a topic is by paraphrasing what you have read about the topic. This means using your own words to express the ideas/theories/concepts – in other words, the intellectual property – of others (and citing and referencing your sources).

You can paraphrase your understanding of a topic in the form of paragraphs.

Instructions

This assessment comprises two (2) parts:

A. Mind-map (50%)

B. Written Response (50%)

PART A: Mind-map (50%)

2. Choose a tool that you would like to use to create your mind-map, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Canva

a. The topic of the article
b. Identify three (3) main points within the article
c. Identify at least three (3) supporting reasons for each main point
d. Apply your library research skills from Assessment 1 to locate and identify one
(1) source to support each of the three main points

PART B: Written Response (50%)

1. Integrate the information from your mind-map and your supporting academic sources to paraphrase the article in 3 x 250-word paragraphs using the following structure for each paragraph:
