Presentation Format
Your Resit Poster presentation should summarise your research for this Resit Speaking Exam topic of ‘a cashless society’ using the following logical structure:
- Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself and provide relevant background information on the general topic of a cashless society. The main outline of your Poster presentation should be clear at this stage (general topic, one clear negative effect, one clear solution to this negative effect, and how it will be evaluated).
- It is suggested this section should last around 45 seconds.
- Consider using data, figures, or statistics to highlight this problem.
- Problem: Based on your research and knowledge, introduce and highlight your one clear negative effect of a cashless society. Supporting details such as evidence and examples must be cited and used to develop your ideas in this section.
- It is suggested this section should last for no more than 60 seconds.
- Consider using data, figures, or statistics to highlight issues surrounding this one negative effect.
- Solution: Based on your research and knowledge, introduce, describe and explain one clear solution to your one negative effect of a cashless society. Supporting details such as evidence and examples must be cited and used to develop your ideas in this section.
- It is suggested this section should last around 60 seconds.
- Evaluation: Based on your research and knowledge, discuss how effectively this one solution deals with the negative effect listed in the Problem section. Evaluate this solution by describing at least one advantage and at least one disadvantage including supporting details such as examples and evidence to support your points. Finally, a clear stance must be evident to indicate if you believe this solution may solve your one clear negative effect of a cashless society.
- It is suggested this section should last around 90 seconds.
- Consider using data, figures, or statistics to support the evaluation of this one solution.
- Conclusion: A brief summary of the main points should be highlighted before leaving a natural conclusion such as a final thought, suggestion, or future prediction regarding this topic.

- Bibliography: The academic sources from your research used in this Resit Poster presentation should be transported from your Reference List and clearly displayed on your Poster.
Suggestions
Task:
- This Poster is intended to support your presentation, not to be a tool to read from.
- The Poster should be designed using bullet points to highlight and summarise key items from your research for the Resit Speaking Exam. This task is not to orally repeat a draft of an essay.
- The Poster is not a platform to paste long sentences. Students creating a Poster in such a manner will most likely read such long sentences.
- Reading from a Poster and offering no such development or extension will be penalized. Reading in such a manner does not display presentation skills appropriate for an academic task.
- Consider the following points as you did for the Project SCW:
- Why you made certain choices when researching this task and topic (selecting the general topic, one negative effect, one solution, how to evaluate it etc.).
- Highlight your own opinion more, and quite naturally throughout. Yes, your presentation is informed by research but what’s your own opinion?
- Can you display your own personality unlike in a written academic task? For instance, using appropriate body language or slightly less academic vocabulary?
- Suggested timings have been provided in the ‘Presentation Format’ section. Considering your time management is an essential presentation skill. Organise your ideas clearly and logically to ensure important sections are sufficiently developed compared to more basic sections such as the Introduction or Conclusion.
- Find and analyse several academic sources relating to the topic. Cite these sources to support your main ideas with details, reasons, explanations, data, or examples throughout your essay.
- any visual aid and data must be displayed on your Poster. How will you highlight and paraphrase this for the audience?
- When citing sources on your Poster, you should use non-integral citations.
Organisation:
- Design your Poster carefully to include all sections plus features such as visual aids.
- Will a portrait or landscape poster be better for you?
- - A .PDF file will allow the presenter to zoom in and drag the Poster to move it.
- - This is why a .PDF file is the preferred file type.
Language:
- Use signposting language to help highlight the structure and organization for the audience.
- Consider how to use topic-specific vocabulary and how to reduce repetition.
- Use a range of linking words (e.g. ‘In addition, For instance, However, Firstly’).
- Proofread carefully to avoid causing issues for the audience.
General:
• Refer back to relevant feedback from Year 1 EAP and EAP115 on your speaking and/or presentation skills. Try to correct any issues that you are already aware of.
• When preparing, record yourself and listen to the recording. This can be a useful technique to:
i. Be aware of the timing and development of certain sections of the presentation.ii. Consider the speed and if the delivery is clear in certain sections.iii. Be more aware of pronunciation errors.iv. Judge if it sounds like you are delivering a presentation, or reading from a document such as the Poster or transcript.
• Preparation is vital for this task since notes are not allowed in the examination room.
• After submitting your Poster, check to see that it has been uploaded properly by downloading your document again from the dropbox on LMC and opening it.
• Refer to the SCW marking descriptors on the following pages and the assessment area on EAP115’s LMC page to understand what is required for a better-quality presentation in this task.
Academic Integrity and Late Penalties
- You must cite and reference any source you include using the XJTLU Harvard Referencing system. This means that you must include citations, preferably non-integral citations on your Poster. A Bibliography must be included on your Poster to highlight the sources that you have directly referred to from your research.
- Your citations and Bibliography should reveal where the support came from and also allow the audience to check the original content when needed.
Please refer to the XJTLU Academic Integrity Policy on the EAP115 LMC page for further details.
Lateness
- • Late submissions of the EAP115 Resit Speaking Exam Poster will not be accepted by the LMC dropbox.
- If you fail to submit your Poster before the submission deadline, you will still be allowed to present the summary of your research for this task but without any Poster.
- Task 1 will be capped at 4/20 as indicated on the marking descriptor.
