MDSB11 Media & The Arts

Students must submit a project proposal (~500 words) and a preliminary bibliography (five sources, one must be from the assigned course materials). The aim of the proposal is to guide students at the start of their research/ writing/ creating towards the larger final project. It is designed to be driven by the interests of students in relation to media texts studied in the course.

Choose a topic that interests you, and think of this project as an opportunity to complicate and expand upon the media and artistic works that we’ve discussed in class. Keep in mind that the materials we’ve studied have many layers worth exploring further, and don’t be afraid to consider how our course materials may connect with our own local experiences of living in Toronto and studying at UofT.

Study the syllabus and its list of readings, explore those that interest you, do further research to add depth to what you are learning about the topic. In such research it is common to explore on tangents, most of which prove useless to the paper in the end but are important in the initial learning stage of developing and sharpening the topic. Yes, it is common to go overboard a bit, then reign in the sources.

Creative Projects are experimental opportunities. Produce thoughtful work, but recognize that, as your instructors, we know that our class isn’t designed to train future art professionals. We invite you to take an imaginative approach to our course materials and themes while also engaging in the kind of (re)making process that we’ve studied together this semester.

Word count: ~500 words excluding bibliography (five sources, one must be from the assigned course materials).

Double-space text, 12 pt, Times New Roman.

Use MLA or Chicago citation and document formatting conventions. If you must use another citation convention, be consistent!

Submit as a PDF document to Proposal folder on Quercus.

RESEARCH:

A research proposal clarifies the researcher’s thoughts into a coherent statement of research intent and answers three questions about the research topic:

What are you investigating?

Course text/materials that you’ve chosen as inspiration and why you chose them

Why are you conducting this research?

How are you investigating this topic? Name and cite specific passages from assigned materials (NOT LECTURE NOTES) you will use to frame your research.

CREATIVE

Creative project proposals should include:

What are you investigating? Medium/media that you plan to use.

Course text/materials that you’ve chosen as inspiration and why you chose them

Why are you conducting this research?

How are you investigating this topic? Name and cite specific passages from assigned materials (NOT LECTURE NOTES) you will use to frame your research.
