24LLP014 – Design in Organisations
Assessment 1: Case Study 2,500 words including a visual Mind Map (A4, Word .doc)
The following assignment aims to address the following question. How can a service organisation innovate by bridging the gap between its espoused values and values in action, attending to its leadership, structure and organisational narratives?
Instructions to address the question are as follows:
1. Select an organisation you aim to study based on the list of organisations available to you. These are - Loughborough University London, Citizens UK, Hackney Council, Plexal, Outlandish, Snook, Design Council, NHS, and BADU Sport) and identify espoused values that this organisation promotes (human-centeredness (patient/student/user/customer), sustainability, social and/or ecological justice, innovation, care, etc.). Select a particular value set that you are interested to further investigate. Keep in mind that some values are interrelated.
2. Undertake a visual and textual data collection of the materials (visit the organisation and take photos (will be available for some organisations only), images from the website, additional literature/materials from the magazines/newspapers, etc.) to create a visual Mind Map of the organisation that evidences how these values are enacted within the organisation through organisational structure, narrative and leadership.
3. Describe and analyse the visual and textual evidence and identify a gap between the espoused values and values in action within the organisation. Use academic literature and materials from lectures to develop your argument.
4. Propose a strategic response to how an organisation can address this gap. Draw on literature and lecture content, including concepts of organisational aesthetics, power, institutional logics, co-design, high performance as well as wider literature on the chosen espoused values.
The case study will include one image that is a visual Mind Map and approximately 2,500-word essay NOT including references or tables. The Mind Map and the essay should be submitted as one document (A4, .doc). The Mind Map should be a high quality resolution image formatted to fit on the A4 horizontal page.
To write the case study you will need to use minimum of 15 journal articles, 10 of which need to be from the Reading List AND/OR Lectures. The essay further needs to be supplemented with additional academic and non-academic sources, including lectures and resources provided in class. You are strongly advised to look for additional materials through the University Library and Google Scholar. You must use correct Referencing throughout the case study, using CRT Harvard.
You are encouraged to use visual elements including work done in class to supplement and illustrate your essay.
Expected structure for the Essay:
Essay title (unique to your essay and different to the essay question) |
Introduction (~500 words) · Introduce the identified organisation. What is the organisation? How does it operate? What is its mission/aim? · Identify and review the espoused values of the organisation. What are espoused values of the organisation? Have they always been the espoused values of the organisations or have they been recently developed? |
Main body (~1000 words) Refer to the values theory to discuss how the espoused values evidence themselves as values in action, in relation to the three aspects of organisational design. Discuss values in action across all three aspects of organisational design. These need to be cross-referenced with the visual Mind Map. · Values in action in the organisational governance and leadership · Values in action in the organisational structure · Values in action in the organisational narratives |
Innovation (~750 words) Propose how an organisation can bridge the gap and innovate towards its espoused values, drawing on one of the theories learned in class: organisational aesthetics, institutional logics, co-design, trauma-informed high-performance dynamics. First, identify what the theory says and then apply it to the gap to derive the innovative approach. |
Conclusion (~250 words) |
References (minimum 15 articles, with 10 from the Reading List AND/OR Lectures+ additional material). |
