Lab Session – Synchronous Generator

Watch the experiment video of synchronous machine operation, and based on the given data answer the following questions.  (12 marks in total)

1.   Draw a clear single-line diagram  for  the  experimental  electrical  system. All  the components (hardware  panels)  need to  be  included and clearly identified  in your drawing. High voltage circuit and low voltage control signal circuit should be drawn in the same diagram with different line colours. (2 marks)
2.   Based on the provided experimental data,

a)   Complete Table 2, Table 3 and Table 4 in the Lab Sheet and show these tables in your lab report. Note that use the formula given in the “Microgrid Experiment Reading Document” for calculation.  (3 marks)
b)   Compare the experimental results with the calculated results and draw your own conclusions on relationship between Voltage and Reactive Power Q under Q droop control, and relationship between Frequency and Real Power P under  P droop control.  (1 mark)

3.   Based on the provided experimental data from the two loggers,

a)   Re-draw  time-domain  curves  regarding  Voltage,  Frequency,  Real  Power  and Reactive  Power for Q-droop experiments and P-droop experiments separately.(1 mark)

b)   For Q-droop curves, write your own conclusions on relationship between voltage and frequency, voltage and reactive power, and voltage and real power.(1.5 marks)

c)   For   P-droop  curves,  write  your  own  conclusions  on   relationship   between frequency and voltage, frequency and reactive power, and frequency and  real power.  (1.5 marks)

d)   Further, clearly illustrate and explain the different stages of the primary frequency response curves for both a frequency increase event and a frequency decrease event. (2 marks)
