EENG10003 - Passive Load Measurement
Electro-mechanical Design and Manufacture Principles
Simulation Lab Sheet LB05: Passive Load Measurement (180mins)
Intended Learning Outcomes:
• Consolidate the use of Simscape for simulation of electrical circuits gained from Activity Sheet 02
• Practice and demonstrate understanding of the response of simple passive circuits to electrical inputs
• Record the conditions and output data of simulations for the purposes of analysing simple circuits.
Requirements
You have been supplied with a Simscape simulation file (Figure 1) that contains 3 loads whose components and component values you have to determine using only electrical simulations. NOTE: This file requires at least MATLAB 2023a to run successfully.
You are required to use the Simscape simulation environment with a range of electrical sources connected appropriately to allow you to
• excite the various loads,
• measure the response and
• use these measurements to determine the nature and value of the components inside each block.
The value of the components will be in the E12 series of preferred values.
1
Record the experiments that you undertake, along with either screenshots or data that you obtain with your simulations in your lab books. Use these (screenshots and data) to determine the structure of the load (e.g. resistor & inductor in series) as well as the values of each components. Explain the process and calculations that you have used to come to your conclusions. Make sure you clearly indicate which load you r are analysing (e.g. Load 1, Load 2, etc) at each stage.
Mark the relevant entry in your lab book clearly as “ Lab 05 – Passive Load Measurement”
Each load has a maximum of 2 components that can be any of the following:
• Resistor
• Inductor
• Capacitor
This work will be assessed as part of the lab book assessment due in week 21.
If you are unsure how to use this environment, Activity Sheet 02 (in Week 14) provides details on how to use Simscape in a way that will help you achieve this task.
Help with running simulations can be found in the MATLAB/SIMULINK/SIMSCAPE discussion board on the
Blackboard website for this unit.
