Plagiarism involves a person using words or ideas of others and passing them off as their own or republishing their own previously submitted work and presenting it as new findings or work without referencing the earlier work. It undermines academic and research integrity and is not tolerated at the University.

Is it very important that you respect academic integrity and avoid all forms of plagiarism. This includes buying essay/writing services from third parties, engaging another person to complete your assessment for you (regardless of if you paid them or not) or selling copies of lecture or tutorial notes to other students. The University takes academic integrity very seriously - if you have been found to breach the Student Conduct, the University may take disciplinary action under the Student Misconduct Procedure.

We may reach out to you about your writing if we have questions in the process of marking. Please keep drafts of your writing to show your thought and work process. If a large part of your report submission is from the outputs of generative AI (such as ChatGPT), it will be regarded as serious academic misconduct and subject to the standard penalties, which may include fail, suspension and exclusion. Please refer to AI Policy in this Guide.

Turnitin is an originality checking and plagiarism prevention tool that enables checking of submitted written work for improper citation or misappropriated content. Each Turnitin assignment is checked against other students' work, the Internet and key resources selected by your Course Coordinator.

If you are instructed to submit your assessment via Turnitin, you will find the link to the Turnitin submission in your Moodle course site. You can submit your assessment well before the deadline and use the Similarity Report to improve your academic writing skills before submitting your final version.

You can find out more information in the Turnitin information site for students.

In this course, students are NOT allowed to use generative AI software for any part of the assessment. The unauthorised use of AI in assessments is a form of cheating and is student misconduct at UNSW. When unauthorised use of AI in assessments is determined, penalties may include a fail and mark of zero for the course, through to suspension or permanent exclusion.

The parameters for late submissions are outlined in the UNSW Assessment Implementation Procedure. For COM1150, if you submit your assessments after the due date, you will incur penalties for late submission unless you have Special Consideration (see below). Late submission is 5% per day (including weekends), calculated from the marks allocated to that assessment (not your grade).
Assessments will not be accepted more than 5 days late.
You are expected to manage your time to meet assessment due dates. If you do require an extension to your assessment, please make a request as early as possible before the due date via the special consideration portal on myUNSW (My Student profile > Special Consideration). You can find more information on Special Consideration and the application process below. Lecturers and tutors do not have the ability to grant extensions.
Special consideration is the process for assessing the impact of short-term events beyond your control (exceptional circumstances), on your performance in a specific assessment task.
What are circumstances beyond my control?
These are exceptional circumstances or situations that may:
• Prevent you from completing a course requirement,
• Keep you from attending an assessment,
• Stop you from submitting an assessment,
• Significantly affect your assessment performance.Available here is a list of circumstances that may be beyond your control. This is only a list of examples, and your exact circumstances may not be listed.
You can find more detail and the application form on the Special Consideration site, or in the UNSW
Special Consideration Application and Assessment Information for Students.Understanding the external business environment is crucial for making informed strategic decisions and ensuring long-term success. In this assessment, you will develop a consulting report analysing the external issues/changes from the socio-cultural and political-legal environments affecting a selected business in a country of your choice and evaluate their potential impacts on the business.
In your analysis, you will apply the relevant concepts from the socio-cultural and political-legal (weeks 2-4) to demonstrate your understanding of the course material and your ability to apply what you learned to a real-world business scenario.
By completing this assessment, you will:
1. Deepen your understanding how socio-cultural and political-legal environments influence businesses
2. Develop an ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world business scenarios.
3. Enhance your research and critical analysis skill
4. Strengthen your report writing skill.
1. Select a local business from a particular local community (e.g., Greater Sydney, Hunter Valley or Mornington Peninsula) in a country of your choice.
2. Research and collect data:
• Gather background information on the chosen business.
• Identify RECENT (within the last three years) issues/changes in the socio-cultural and political-legal environments (one issue/change per environment) that are relevant to the business.
• Collect evidence, data, real-world examples, etc. to support analysis
3. Analyse issues/changes in the global business environment
• Identify the level of global business environments where the issues/changes exist (city, regions within state, state/province, national, regional blocs, global/the world)
• Explain the importance and relevance of the issues/changes to the business as seen through the socio-cultural and political-legal lenses.
• In doing so, apply the key concepts pertaining to these lenses (discussed in week 2, 3, and 4) and relate them to the issues/changes and the client’s business. Remember this assessment is about how the RECENT issues/changes are potentially impacting the business, so this should help inform your selection of relevant concepts for your report.
• Use relevant evidence, data, and real-world examples, etc. from credible sources to support your analysis.

• Synthesise information from various sources and perspectives to present a holistic, comprehensive understanding of the external business environment

4. Evaluate impacts: Identify and evaluate the potential opportunities and threats posed by the socio cultural and political-legal issues/changes that might affect your client’s business in the future based on the analysis of the relevant issues/changes (make sensible judgements in 100-150 words).
5. Draft the report: Organize your findings into a coherent report using a professional format (see suggested structure below)
1. Understanding and Application of Concepts (35%): Demonstrates a thorough understanding of socio-cultural and political, legal concepts and effectively applies these concepts to the chosen business scenario.
2. Critical Analysis and Synthesis (35%): Provides a deep and insightful analysis of the external environment and synthesises information from various sources and perspectives to support arguments; identify and evaluates potential opportunities and threats posed by the external business environment.
3. Report Presentation (20%): Adheres to professional formatting and report writing standards; organise ideas clearly and concisely; and demonstrates appropriate use of referencing.
4. Written Communication (10%): Uses clear, concise and professional language; ensures correct grammar, spelling and punctuation; presents information in a logical and coherent manner, making the report easy to read and understand. Use a Professional Report format (see Business School’s Writing a Report Guide). In general, your consulting report must include the following sections:
1. Executive Summary:
• A summary of the entire report in a single page.
• This should be written after the rest of the report has been completed.
• The aim of this section is to allow a busy manager to get an overview of the entire report without needing to read the full document.
2. Introduction: Provide a brief overview of the report, including:
• What is the purpose of this document?
• For which organisation is it developed?
• What are the issues/changes identified though the lenses?
• How and why they are relevant for your client’s business?
3. Body: Analysis of the Issues/changes in the Business Environment and Evaluation of Impacts
• Organise this section with subheadings in a way that best supports your analysis. You can structure it by lenses (socio-cultural and political-legal), by specific issues/changes, or using another logical method. However, it must include the analysis of issues/changes and evaluation of impacts (opportunities and threats).
• The analysis supports your identification of relevant opportunities and threats and their relevance for your client’s business. Therefore, it is vital that the analysis section is more extensive and detailed than the subsequent discussions on opportunities and threats.
4. Conclusion:
• Briefly summarise your report.
• Highlight how each lens helps your business client to understand complex global business environments and make appropriate decisions.
5. Reference list: Include a reference list following the Harvard Referencing format.
6. Appendices
• If you have additional information that is important and relevant but cannot fit within the body of your report, you may include this in an appendix.
• Anything included in an appendix must be referred to in the body of the report. However, the story of the report must make sense without having to refer to an appendix.
• This should not be a data dump. If you can provide a reliable link or a summary, this will add more value.

1. You must submit your report in Word format. Submitting a format other than Word might result in you receiving a penalty for Assessment 2.

2. Word limit: 1500words (+/-10%), excluding executive summary, table of contents, reference list and appendices.
3. The title page must include your name, zID number and the name of the chosen company and country.
4. Footer must have page numbers.
5. Use 1.5 line spacing, Arial font, font size 12-point, Australian spelling.
6. Include graphics, tables, graphs, etc.
7. Use in-text referencing and a reference list in Harvard referencing format. Your work cannot be marked if these are omitted. See UNSW guide on Harvard referencing.
8. Adhere to the standard academic integrity regarding use of other people’s words, ideas, and facts.
9. Submit via Turnitin on Moodle course site.
