Assignment 3 – Group Design Project

Due: 11pm Wednesday 28th May 2025

Report worth: 30%

Presentation worth: 10%

Aim: In groups, work through aspects of the interaction design process to design a digital interactive product of your choice.

Groups: This is a group assignment. You must form groups of 3-4 people by the end of Wednesday 30th April on Stream. After this date I will allocate remaining students to a group. I will send an email to each group with all group members names and email addresses so that you can get in contact with each other. If you would prefer for me to NOT share your email with your group, please contact me by Wednesday 30th April.

Part A: Design an interactive product

In your groups, your task is to design an interactive product. Choose any product you like but discuss your choice with me (Rachel) first! The product could be anything that has a digital interactive component, e.g. a website, desktop app, mobile app, virtual/augmented reality, brain-computer interface, tangible user interface, haptics etc. You will not be implementing your design into actual software, so there are no limits when it comes to the technologies/hardware that you include in your design, be as creative as you wish!

In your project report you need to document your interaction design process including the requirements, conceptual design, and prototyping. We won’t be able to engage users in the design process for this assignment but give details about when and how you would engage users if you could.

The report should provide comprehensive details of your design process as well as your final design. It should include an introduction, body, and conclusion. The body of the report should include details of requirements, conceptual design, evaluation plans, prototypes (low and high fidelity) and final prototype design.

In summary your goal is to show that you understand these aspects of the interaction design process. As proof of this you need to employ the user-centred design tools we have learnt about in lectures to produce aproduct design. It is strongly encouraged that you use an iterative design approach and provide evidence of this.

One project report is required per group. Please make sure all student names and ID numbers are listed on the cover sheet.

Page limit: 15 pages

Part B: Group Presentation

Each group must record a 10 minute presentation of your project. All members of the group must contribute to the presentation as you will be marked individually for this.

In your presentation, introduce your final product and describe the design process you used to come up with it. Also give a reflection on parts of the process that you found valuable and why.

Part C: Individual reflection and peer assessment

Each group member must complete the reflection and peer assessment form (provided on Stream).

The purpose of this final part of the assessment is for us to determine individual knowledge and understanding of the material and the project, as different team members often make different contributions. Each group member must complete this form on their own, and no copying or duplication between team members will be permitted. This part must be submitted by each individual, and must be your own, original work.

Marks will be allocated according to the contribution of team members, determined by this reflection and peer assessment.

Allowed AI usage:

Massey uses the AI Assessment Scale. This assessment is Level 2 which Massey specifically defines as:

AI PLANNING

You may use AI for planning, idea development and research. Your final submission should show how you have developed and refined these ideas.

The prompts and outputs of any AI used must be provided in an appendix to your submitted assessment. See these guidelines for writing your appendix: https://stream.massey.ac.nz/mod/book/view.php?id=5430644&chapterid=1354035

Find out more about AI at Massey: https://stream.massey.ac.nz/course/view.php?id=10

The key to Level 2 is that NO DIRECT AI CONTENT is allowed in the final assessment submission. As a fundamental principle you must make sure that what you submit for your assessment is your own work. What does this mean specifically in the context of this assessment?

You may ask AI to help you in the following ways:

  • You may use AI to explain concepts or clarify topics. For example: “Explain what brain computer interfaces are.”
  • You may use AI to provide examples to deepen your understanding. For example: “Can you give me an example of how a brain-computer interface might be used”
  • When using AI, make sure to carefully evaluate its responses for accuracy and relevance.
You must not use AI in the following ways:
  • You must not directly input assessment instructions into an AI bot or software.
  • You must not directly copy any content from online sources or generated by AI into your assessments, even if you modify it slightly afterward.
  • You must not paraphrase AI-generated content to make it appear as your own work. This means you should not reword or rearrange AI-generated content and present it as your own creation, even if you change some of the wording or structure.
  • You must not assume AI outputs are always accurate—always verify information independently.

Still unsure? Ask your lecturer.

Generative AI use statement

You must submit a generative AI use statement for all assessments that includes details on whether or not you have used AI, what AI tools have been used, and all AI prompts and responses. The template for this is provided in the assignment documents on Stream. More general information on AI usage can be found in Massey’s AI Essentials course on Stream: https://stream.massey.ac.nz/course/view.php?id=10

Submission instructions
  • Submit on Stream using the Assignment 3 Group Submission link the following:
    • 1x project report per group
    • 1x video presentation per group.
    • 1x generative AI statement using the provided template per group.
  • Submit one reflection and peer assessment form per individual on Stream using the Assignment 3 Individual Submission link
  • Proof read your assignment carefully; marks will be deducted for poor presentation.
  • Late penalty: Assignments submitted after the due date will incur a penalty of 20%.
  • Originality: Assignments will be checked on turnitin, so ensure your work is your own. If you use content from another source including AI e.g. ChatGPT (either directly or if you simply use the ideas), you must reference it appropriately.
