Assessment 1: Critical review presentation
In the week selected, slides must be submitted by 5pm (AEST) on the Monday prior to your class
30%
Class presentation with 5 slides
5 slides, 5 mins 30 seconds maximum (plus Q& A afterwards)
Via Turnitin assignment
Description of assessment task
This assessment is designed for each student to create a student-led discussion.Every student will introduce and critically evaluate one article from the presentation readings listed for their chosen week in the Tutorial Guide. In Week 1, students will choose an article and sign up to do a presentation on it – the schedules for each class are on Moodle. How you arrange your material and what you include is up to you, but your presentation should:
• summarise for other students in your class the key arguments in the article
• demonstrate how the work relates to other academic discussion on the topic (a minimum of three relevant academic sources must be used to contextualise/augment the case made in your presentation article)
• relate any key points of interest in the article
• contain one (1) question to pose to the class to encourage class debate – the presenter’s participation in debate is assessed as part of their participation mark.
• Note 4 students will have prepared to broadly enter the debate each week. All class members are encouraged to be part of the debate and discussion following the presentation.
Once you have selected your week and article to present and your weeks and articles for the debate, you must not change your selection without approval from your tutor. No student is permitted to remove another student's name from the list.
Submission instructions
• Your presentation should be uploaded to Turnitin by 5pm on the Monday before you present.
• Referencing: Your slides should contain in-text references with page numbers where appropriate, and the final slide should list your sources – including your presentation article. A minimum of four (4) academic sources from suggested course materials is required for this task.
• Students who choose irrelevant, outdated or ‘double-dipped’ sources from other courses typically do not do well in this assessment task.
• Using academic sources to support your argument will be much more highly regarded than using media/internet sources. Academic sources should have the most influence on your work.
• Make sure not to ‘cut and paste’ material onto your slides or into your presentation notes– any plagiarism will be viewed negatively by your marker.
• Students must do a presentation to get a mark for this assessment task.
Please note: Using Kahoot! or other game quiz platforms is NOT encouraged.
Assessment 2A: Ten minute in class debriefs (10MD)
Randomly 5 times across the term during lecture classes.
10%
Materials/resources see course & tutorial guide
Submitted during Lecture.
Note you must be in attendance to be eligible
Via Socrative, in class activity
Description of assessment task
We recognise that being an active learner and participant helps you to be more successful. Coming to class and engaging with the teacher and your peers is an important part of the Synthesise and Integrate (lecture) classes. As part of the active participation in the overall course you need to be prepared for five (5) random 10MDs. This will provide you with the best foundation to learn in MGMT3701. Each week (including week 1) during the lecture a question can be posted on the board. You will be given a login address and have 10 minutes to discuss and submit an independent answer to the question/problem/provocation. You must be in attendance to complete the task. If you are going to be absent you must contact Lynn on [email protected] PRIOR to the commencement of the lecture. In order to have your absence recognised Once the session has commenced no further allowable absences will be enacted. Once the 10MD has commenced students will not be permitted to enter the class. IP addresses will be monitored.
Assessment 2b: Active Participation
In your selected three (3) weeks prepare to engage broadly with the debate surrounding the prepared readings. Each week actively participate in workshop class activities.
20%
Materials/resources see course & tutorial guide
In each of your selected 3 weeks, ask at least 1 question to the presenter and be able to lead the debate where needed.
Note you must attend your assigned workshops (and 80% of all workshops) to be eligible for marks
Not required, in class activity
Description of assessment task
• This assessment is based on being able to engage with informed debate as is critical in the workplace. In your selected t 3 weeks, you are expected to read a minimum of one (1) of the presentation readings and some of the short class discussion readings.
• After the presenter has completed their work you will take an active role in the discussion with your classmates in the tutorials, demonstrating your knowledge and developing other’s understanding of each topic.
• Students should demonstrate that they have read an article by raising some new ideas/material from it. Marks will be awarded individually.
Submission instructions
In class no other submission is required.
Supporting resources and links
In completing your workshop task, you will have to undertake some research beyond the text by using suggested readings/class materials. You should look to make the material ‘come alive’ and be relevant to your peers. Please note Wikipedia or general websites will not be sufficient for this task.
We recognise that being an active learner and participant helps you to be more successful. Coming to class and engaging with the teacher and your peers is an important part of the lectures and workshop sessions. As part of your active participation in the overall course you need to engage with your classmates each week. This will provide you with the best foundation to learn in MGMT3701 and it is what is expected in the workplace Make sure you take part in activities, such as small group discussions, short informal presentations to the class, answering questions, and whole of class discussions.
Simply attending the Workshops without getting involved in discussion and activities is of little value either to you or your classmates and will result in a minimal participation mark. The quality of your tutorial contributions throughout the term and your overall mark will reflect the level and regularity of reading effort and insight you were able to demonstrate in tutorials. Friendly, collegial debate will contribute to a pleasant and engaging learning experience for us all.
Assessment 3: Choice assessment industrial advice or moot
Part A Monday November 10 noon or Part B in class November 18 or 19
40%
‘legal advice’ (Part A) or in class moot (Part B)
3 pages (Part A) or oral presentation (Part B)
Description of assessment task
In this assessment task, you will be asked to prepare for or be a part of a FWA matter. As a reasonably informed practitioner, manager or employee, it is vital that you understand how the FWA works, how matters are run and what advice and arguments are relevant in relation to matters before the FWC. In week 5 you will nominate to either prepare advice for one party to a matter (Part A) or participate in the moot relating to that matter as a defined party (Part B). The case will be released in week 8 for preparation.
Part A participants will prepare quasi legal advice for each side (they must still attend week 10 to support their teams).
Part B participants will engage in a moot (mock trial). Part B participants will represent either the respondent or the complainant, and give testimony, act as a witness or provide counsel.
Follow the directions below.
Step 1: To begin this assignment, please review the case provided on Moodle
Step 2: (Part A) prepare ‘legal advice’- your advice should consider relevant parts of the Act and EBA. You need to consider this along with the complaint. In preparing this, think about aspects of our course that are highlighted. This is due week 9.
Step 3: (Part B) will receive a folder of the advice to prepare for the moot in week 10.
In this assessment you will apply the tools and concepts you have developed over the course to analyse a FWA case demonstrating solid understanding of the FWA workings.
You will be required to undertake research to support your work using available resources through the UNSW Library catalogues, databases and collections, or other appropriate sources. You can also use any materials provided by the course. Any Generative AI use must be cited and will not be considered sufficient alone.
Extra advice:
• Sometimes the answer is not obvious; you will have to think about it.
• For some questions, there is no ‘right’ answer; it will be a matter of opinion supported by clauses fromthe Act. However, some opinions have more validity than others. Your response will be more convincing if you justify your position with material and citations from relevant research.
• It’s OK to ‘Google’ information if you want to do so. However, think about the quality and authority of the sites you visit. Fair Work Commission reports and fact sheets are all helpful. As is the site Austlii.edu.au
• Feel free to talk with your classmates about preparing your materials but you must submit independently, so make sure that you don’t inadvertently copy from each other.
• This assignment must be referenced like any other assignment so make sure you provide intext referencing and attach a reference list of all the sources you cited. Please see the writing advice on Moodle if you’re not sure about referencing.
