What this paper is about An introductory computerbased accounting paper emphasising the preparation of accounting records. This paper provides opportunity to learn the language of accounting through addressing practical problems.
How this paper will be taught
  • 1 x 2-hour lecture per week
  • 1 x 2-hour workshop per week
  • 1 x 1-hour computer lab tutorial per week

This paper is offered in FLEXI Synchronous mode, which means some elements of this paper can be completed online. Lectures, workshops, labs and tests are on campus and students are encouraged to attend in person as this is a very practical and technical paper. Please note:

1. Workshop and Lab sessions will be on-campus face-to-face only. Students who wish to study online are required to contact the convenor with an explanation as to why they are physically unable to attend on-campus activities and alternative arrangements will be made.

2. Students are required to engage in in-class discussions, workshops, labs and tests during scheduled times.

Learning OutcomesStudents who successfully complete the paper should be able to:
  1. 1. Explain the role and purpose of accounting, accounting processes and systems in relation to financial accounting
  2. 2. Identify, recognise and record transactions through the application of generally accepted accounting principles, accounting standards and the NZ Conceptual Framework
  3. 3. Explain the purpose of financial statements and demonstrate knowledge in their preparation to measure cash flows, performance and position
  4. 4. Use Excel and accounting software to record business transactions to prepare reports for decision-making
  5. 5. Describe the different business structures and record transactions to illustrate the activities of sole traders in particular
  6. 6. Explain the fundamental principles of ethics and their application to the business world, particularly with regard to internal controls
