MBAB 5P20 Applied Business Research

ASSIGNMENT #1 (MBAB 5P20)

1. A survey of where overseas tourists like to spend their vacations in a particular country was taken to determine what attractions should be advertised. The results were:

§ national parks 15%

§ beaches 48%

§ cities 8%

§ golf courses 25%

§ mountain climbing 4%

Construct a bar chart to display the results.

Hints:

1) The percentages are given already
2) Create five variables in the "Variable View" window, and put the five percentages (one in each column) in the first row of the "Data View" window.
3) Select: Graphs, then Bar, then Select "Simple" and "Summaries of separate variables" (IMPORTANT!), then Drag the five variables to the right under "Bars Represent"

How do you interpret these results? What are their possible implications for the country’s tourism industry (be creative!) – approx. 1 page, double-spaced (excluding bar chart)

2. Using the SPSS Chapter 7 Data File B:

Choose two variables from the following list: Q1 to Q22.

Obtain frequencies and descriptive statistics of these two variables.

Draw a scatter plot for these two variables.

How do you interpret this graph? Make sure that your interpretation is based on the actual descriptions of these two variables (which are given in the Variable View portion of the data file)

Hints:

Select Graphs, then Scatter/Dot, then Simple Scatter, then define Y Axis and X Axis variables, then “OK”, then click right mouse and select “Edit Content”, then select “Elements”, and then “Fit Line at Total”

3. Assume that a population of thousands of people whose responses were used to develop an anxiety test had scores that were normally distributed with μ = 30 and σ = 10. What proportion of people in this population would have anxiety scores within each of the following ranges of scores? Show your calculations.

a. Below 20

b. Above 30

c. Between 10 and 50

d. Below 10

e. Below 50

f. Above 50

g. Either below 10 or above 50

h. Assuming that a score in the top 5% of the distribution would be considered extremely anxious, would a person whose anxiety score was 50 be considered extremely anxious? Explain your answer.
