1. The Case

Best Bike Ever (BBE) is a company1 started as a local family business more than 40 years ago in North America. The company sells a wide range of bikes, bike parts and accessories, as well as sport clothing and equipment related to biking. BBE grew rapidly in its first decade and soon expanded to an international business after few years with a dozen branches across several countries.

The CEO of BBE has recently been to a conference about Business Analytics where several companies shared their fantastic experiences and stories on how analytics help them to achieve business value and enhance competitive advantages. The BBE CEO was amazed to see how data-driven fact-based insights from analytics can improve decision-making in organisations which in turn increase profitability, performance and success. Upon returning from the conference, he placed a high priority on initiating an analytics project in BBE. As a graduate from Massey University who has successfully completed an Analytics course and learnt how to use relevant tools and techniques, you are assigned to the project team and your job is to embark BBE on Analytics!

2. Your Task

As a business analytics specialist, your job is to use Qlik Sense product to create a visual dashboard for BBE, analyse existing data, and write a report for BBE management providing them with your analysis on sales data.

Download BBE dataset (BBE Dataset.xlsx) from Stream (under Assessment 2 tab). It is an Excel file containing four Excelsheets holding the Internetsalesinformation of BBE between 2017 to 2020. Then use what you learnt in lectures and Qlik Sense workshops to create a useful, informative, insightful and rich dashboard for BBE management to use. Think about what diagrams/visualisations would be useful for the managers of BBE (so should be on the dashboard). Then use your dashboard to analyse the BBE sales data and write your report for BBE top management.

The intention of the report is to provide a good and informative summary of data to BBE management and bring the important and interesting highlights to their attention. Think about it this way: How would you write the report if you were really a staff of BBE and were asked to analyse the sales data and write a report for the top management? Bring in your judgment, imagination and creativity. Creativity is the spice!

What to include and discuss in your report (and your dashboard) is ultimately your choice. But as a guideline, your report, at least, should address the following points:

1- Screenshot of the ENTIRE dashboard that you have produced with Qlik Sense platform for BBE management, as an appendix (i.e., one screenshot of the whole dashboard so we can see what you have built). You can also create a PDF of the dashboard and submit it as an separate appendix to your report (ie. as a separate file). Make sure to refer to the appendix in an appropriate place in your main report.

a. At least 9 (NINE) visualisations (graphs/charts) are required to be included in your dashboard.

b. One of the visualisations (graphs) should be a trend of sales amount for the entire company over the years of 2017 to 2020.

c. If the dashboard sheet extent further down your screen (which is likely to happen), take several screenshots (from top and bottom of the sheet) and include them all in your report.

2- Analysis of status of sales from the perspective of product categories and sub-categories, location of sales, timing of sales, customers, and similar (both in dashboard and the report)
3- Discuss some of the most interesting graphs that you have created. What do they inform?
4- Identify and discuss any interesting insight you can find in the salesinformation that you would like to bring to the attention of the managers, e.g., any interesting patterns?
5- An addition to above, include a specific dedicated section in your report to answer the below three questions:
• Question 1: What was the bestselling product category in 2019 (in terms of $$$), and for this bestselling product category, what is the trend of Sales in 2019? (include a trend line)
• Question 2: What was the bestselling country in 2018?
• Question 3: What was the best selling product category of January 2020, and what was the total sales amount for that category?
No specific discussion is needed when you are answering the above three questions. Just write the answer briefly and include clear screenshots from relevant graphs in your dashboard to support/evident your answers.

Remember, this is a data-driven report. Everything that you say in the report should be backed-up by data. Your dashboard is your primary source. For example, if you say that product X was sold most in 2018, you should provide a screenshot of the relevant graph (from dashboard) in your report to support your finding/statement.

3. Access to Qlik Sense

Qlik Sense is a paid platform but they allow academic access for students for free. To get the free student access, follow the instruction posted on Stream (Stream > Assessment 2).

4. Explanation of the data in the dataset

This section explains the data in the BBE Dataset.xlsx dataset file (available on Stream). This Excel file contains four different sheets which holds the Internet sales information of BBE: Products, Customers, Orders and Promotion

This is the explanation of the four sheets:

Table Name
Description
Orders
Data of internet sales. It includes the details of all internet sales transactions during the period of 2017-2020.
Products
List of products and information about them
Customers
List of customers and information about them
Promotion
Information about promotions

Below is a diagram showing the relationship between these six tables (that together present Internet Sales information of the company):

Data in Orders table (or sheet) is connected to the other tables with a number of Key fields. For example, ProductKey field in Products table tells you which product was sold in each transaction. As an example, in the first line of data in Orders, you can see that ProductKey is 310:

Then, when you refer to the table of the Products, you will see that product 310 is a Road Bike and its name is Road-150 Red, 62 :
Same logic applies to the other tables. For instance, the customer who bought product 310 is customer 21768 (in Orders table/sheet):

From the Customers table, the name of this guy is Cole A Watson, born on 19/02/1952, a male, with bachelors degree in management, etc:

The name of the fields in the tables are quite self-explanatory, however, description for some of the fields is provided below (not all fields and all tables as many are very obvious from the names):

5. Data Pre-processing
As discussed in the lectures, data cleaning and pre-processing is a key part of any Analytics project.
For this assignment, the data has been already cleaned and is ready for the Analytics project. So you don’t need to do any work on the data (i.e., Excel file) and can upload the Excel file into Qlik Sense as it is.

But note: There is only one thing that you should do after you’ve uploaded the Excel file into Qlik Sense: Action 1 and Action 2 bellow:

Action 1: This may not happen to everyone but for some of you, when you are importing the assignment Excel dataset into Qlik Sense, your will see two additional tables show up in the "Tables" list starting with _xlmn (see below image). Do NOT tick these two tables. Just tick the first four (products, customers, orders, promotion).

Action 2: When you upload the data into Qlik Sense and apply the Recommended Associations(Apply all), you will see the below result:

As you can see, Qlik Sense automatically detectsthe logical relationship of Orders with Customers and Promotion, but not with Products. You will need to manually define this relationship.

To do so, drag the Products bubble and drop it onto the Orders bubble. When you do this, you will see the below screen:

Select Products.ProductKey from the Products table and Orders.ProductKey from the Orders table, then click Associate (this is telling Qlik that these two Product Keys represent the same thing):

Your new relationship should look as follows:
Next, select Load Data. Now, all is set and you can proceed with developing your dashboard. Good luck! ☺

6. Important Notes

• Refer to Massey guideline for how to write a good Business Report:

https://owll.massey.ac.nz/assignment-types/business-report.php

• You can also watch the very useful videos produced by former School of Management English Language & Academic Success (ELAS) advisor, Nick Roelants, about how to write a good “report”:

http://webcast.massey.ac.nz/Mediasite/Catalog/Full/3cb456bb518e471e8cd7af055633d37221.
Watch those videos related to Report (titled “Report Writing 101”). Others are not relevant to this assignment.

• There are no specific instruction for font type, size, line space, etc! … As a University student, however, you are expected to deliver a professional piece of work that is clear, neat and well organised. Don’t forget to include page numbers. Figures and tables (if used) should be always numbered and captioned, and you should refer to them at least once in the body of your writing. Using justified text is visually appealing.

• Clarity of language, layout and general presentation is an assessable aspect of the assignment.

• Remember that your document must look like a professional piece of work. Remember that you are presenting it to your managers in BBE. Try to impress them by the quality of your work! Managers always care about the appearance and small details.

• This is an individual assignment. Group work is not allowed, and your report should be your and only your work. The assignment is to be your own analysis and must reflect your own understanding.
• Massey's provisions regarding plagiarism fully apply. Please refer to the Academic Honesty and Plagiarism section of the Course Guide (available on Stream) for important information.
• Late submission is allowed but will be entitled to penalty as per Massey policy. Refer to the Course Guide for details.
• Don’t change data in the Excel files (dataset)
• NULL in Excel files means the field is empty/blank.
• You don’t have to use all fields in the tables in the dashboard. Some of them might be irrelevant to your purpose. Rely on your judgment.
• This assignment is about using Qlik Sense platform. Using other tools is not acceptable. For example, you cannot analyse the date with Excel or produce diagrams with Excel. Only Qlik Sense.
• Finally – because this is a business report simulation first and foremost, you do not need to use any academic references or have a reference list! Your dashboard is your evidence and references.

7. Submission

• Submit your report as ONE Microsoft Word file (.docx), vis Stream.
