With increasing usage of mobile smart devices like smart phones and tablets, reading has declined in popularity. Compared to playing games, watching online videos and the pervasiveness of social media, reading is seen as a boring and pointless activity. However, it has been shown that reading improves performance in school and contributes to lifelong learning. Therefore, it is important that reading should be encouraged and promoted in the age of the digital revolution and social media.
The National Library Board is inviting organisations to propose a creative concept to promote reading among youths in Singapore. An entire hall in the National Library Building will be used to promote reading. Your company has been known for successfully promoting ideas and events in the past. Your team has been invited by the National Library Board to come up with an event concept, organise activities in the hall and publicise the effort to promote reading and increasing the love for reading among young Singaporeans. A budget of $20,000 has been set aside for this event.
RESEARCH
Primary Market Research: Design and conduct a SURVEY to find out what types of books and reading material youths are interested in and the creative and fun ways they would like to be engaged in for them to be more interested in reading as a regular activity.
a. Design 8-10 valid survey questions relating to the activities and obtain approval from your lecturer. These questions should provide valuable information on the organisation of this event and target groups you are planning for. NOTE: Keep the purpose of the event in mind.
b. Collate the survey findings to justify your creative proposal for this event.
c. These survey questions and findings will be included in your presentation.
Secondary Market Research: Do online research for published data or similar initiatives that will provide creative ideas/strategies to justify/strengthen your team’s overall concept for the event.
Note: The survey findings (primary research) and online research data (secondary research) will be included in the presentation by Speaker 2.
YOUR TEAM’S CONCEPT AS A BUSINESS PROPOSAL
1. Brainstorm in your group to propose a creative concept for this event, backed up by sound research, name it and write out a Business Proposal (in your Individual Portfolio).
2. Present this proposal which explains your concept to the National Library Board.
3. You have to include a Business Model in your analysis of this concept.
4. You are to include either a poster OR a 1-minute video clip to feature and publicise your creative concept. (NOTE: The purpose of the poster or video is to attract/invite your target groups to participate in this event. Details such as relevant pictures, date, location, organisers, sponsors, etc. must be included in the poster or video to attract your target groups).
You will be in teams of 5: 1 team leader, 1 co-leader and 3 team members. Approval is needed if your team has fewer than 5 members or exceeds the stated number.
