Assignment:
Group Presentation
You will be working in groups of roughly 5-6 people. These will be assigned by the module leaders.
The scenario that you will consider is as follows:
North Yorkshire Council is considering the location of a new recycling facility for different types of waste, e.g. electrical items, clothing, paper, cardboard, etc. They have set up a committee and invited your group as Consultants to provide some advice. Ideally, there should be a balance of different considerations, for example: visual impact on the scenery, distance for the transportation to/from the site, risk of contamination, etc.
- Identify 6 possible facilities, which must cover a variety of locations across North Yorkshire.
- Estimate the cost of development and the running cost per month of each facility.
- Conduct interviews with around 6 PhD students and academic staff of various seniorities (as hypothetical stakeholders in this decision-making process) and create a value tree of the relevant attributes.
- Use the Delphi method to facilitate decision-making involving multiple individuals.
- Use SMART to establish preferences (independent of cost) from the interviews. Discuss your findings with the interviewees and refine your attribute values and swing weights.
- Carry out relevant sensitivity analysis.
- Investigate the strengths and limitations of your analysis in the context of your decision problem.
- Present your findings.
1. A 20-minute online PowerPoint presentation on your findings, providing recommendations to the North Yorkshire Council committee. Apart from the final outcome, you should discuss how you worked as a group and allocated tasks, how and where you gathered information and how the model was refined (including attributes, values, and swing weights) as the analysis progressed. You should also discuss how you have dealt with views from multiple individuals.
The presentation will take place on [date to be confirmed] in [location to be confirmed]. The final presentation slides and the poster must be submitted electronically in pdf format to Yorkshare by 11:00 am on [date to be confirmed]. Moreover, two copies of the poster need to be submitted to the markers at the start of your presentation.
A summary of assessment criteria for the group work is given in the table below.
