W6D2 Asynchronous Class - Language, Aging, and Dementia

Assignment Sheet

February 12, 2025

1. Answer the following warm-up questions:

1a. What does the “IMRD” article structure stand for? ________________

1b. True or False? You should always read research articles sequentially (from start to finish)? If false, in what order should you read articles?

2. Define the following terms based on the reading (Ch. 19) and outside sources:

2a. Dementia (and watch a bit of this dementia screening video)

2b. Alzheimer's disease

2c. Elderspeak

2d. Represented speech or reported speech

2e. Sun-downing

3. Create an annotated bibliography entry for EITHER the article Calzà et al. (2021): Linguistic features and automatic classifiers for identifying mild cognitive impairment and dementia OR the article Anderson et al. (2020) Does bilingualism protect against dementia? A meta-analysis. Follow the guidelines from the week 6, day 1 lecture about how to read academic articles for the purpose of creating an annotated bibliography entry. Don’t get lost in the details! Hone in on the abstract and results/discussion. Focus on answering the following questions in a paragraph-long response (formatted as a paragraph!):

● What is the main finding or contribution of this source?

● How did the authors arrive at this finding? (Here, briefly describe their methodology—the “who, what, when, where, how”).

● How can this source inform your target public audience? In this case, your public audience is young people who want to learn more about how to either diagnose dementia or how to delay its onset.

Your annotated bibliography will start with the APA citation of the source, which will be either:

Calzà, L., Gagliardi, G., Favretti, R. R., & Tamburini, F. (2021). Linguistic features and automatic classifiers for identifying mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Computer Speech & Language, 65. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.csl.2020.101113

[Add your annotated bibliography paragraph here]

OR

Anderson, J. A., Hawrylewicz, K., & Grundy, J. G. (2020). Does bilingualism protect against dementia? A meta-analysis. Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 27, 952-965. https://doi.org/10.3758/s13423-020-01736-5

[Add your annotated bibliography paragraph here]

4. The chapter’s author, Boyd Davis, advocates for reducing the stigma associated with dementia and instead acknowledging what people with dementia can do, especially with help from a partner. He concludes the chapter mentioning the guidelines for working with folks with dementia: “spend at least 10 hours with one or more people before moving on. Practice active listening. Call people by [title] and their last name. Don’t use elderspeak…Don’t fire off questions, especially the who-what-where kind. Don’t ask if they remember you. Someday you’ll be old, too” (Davis, 2020, p. 288).

What did this chapter, and the article you read above, teach you about people with dementia? If you feel comfortable sharing, you’re welcome to mention if you’ve known anyone with dementia and how the course content relates to how you cared for/interacted with them. What are your broad, real-world takeaways from this lesson? (Please respond in a few sentences).
