Unit Introduction

This unit provides the opportunity to gain a sound theoretical and practical understanding of the principles and practice of strategic management, leadership and ethical practice. You will gain in depth knowledge of the management challenges within the fashion industry. You will develop skills as a strategic thinker and acquire knowledge of behaviours and values required to manage and lead a fashion organisation. You will evaluate the impact of organisational structures and processes that impact contemporary strategic management practice.
Brief

Element 1: A time constrained case study analysis (2,000 words) (Mandatory, 50% of the grade)

This will be an in-person, time-constrained examination. You will need to demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical strategic concepts by using appropriate examples, academic models and frameworks for analysis, and to provide recommendations where appropriate. The exam questions will be contextualized for strategic fashion management. The case study will be shared during the unit delivery and students are expected to prepare notes from the lectures and seminars to revise for the exam.

Element 2: An individual reflection on own leadership styles (1,000 words) (Mandatory, 50% of the grade)

You will produce a reflective journal pertaining to different leadership styles. This will relate not only to your experience on this unit but will also require you to think about the previous units you have studied across the BSc Fashion Management.

Your reflection will take the form of journal, split into three separate entries;

1. An entry relating to your experience on a BSc Fashion Management unit where you were required to work in a group. We would advise you use EMP, but you are free to relate it to another unit if you wish.
2. An entry relating to your experience on the formative assessment which will take the form of a leadership simulation.
3. Either;
An entry relating to an experience you have had in taking leadership initiative in the workplace (this could take the form of work experience you have been involved in, either through DIPs or part-time work)

OR

An entry relating to a more personal experience where you have had to take the lead on making a difficult decision that has impacted on others, either positively or negatively.

Formative Assessment

For both Element 1 and Element 2, seminars will provide an informal opportunity to receive formative feedback through activities related to lecture material. For element 1, a mock exam with peer assessment and discussion of answers will take place in the week commencing14 October 2024 in the seminar session. For element 2, there will be online tutorials in the week commencing 13 January 2025.

Submission Information

Adjusted Assessment

Students with an Individual Support Agreement can request to use the Adjusted Assessment deadline. They must confirm this with their programme administrator at least 2 weeks before the deadline.

Note:

• Adjusted assessment will not include additional time if the submission is a group outcome or group presentation.
• Adjusted assessment is different to Extenuating Circumstances (EC).
Extenuating Circumstances
Sometimes, unexpected things happen in life that are beyond your control.
This can make it harder for you to:
• do well on your course
• finish your coursework
• submit your coursework on time.
If something unforeseeable happens to you, you can let us know and we'll consider that when we mark your work. We call these situations extenuating circumstances.
Visit the Extenuating Circumstances and Timeout webpage for more information.
When to expect and how to receive feedback
3-4 weeks from your submission deadline
You will receive feedback online via the Assessment Feedback platform.
Please note grades are not confirmed until after the Exam Board.
Late Submission
Please note if you submit work after the deadline but within 24 hours you will incur a penalty. See Assessment Regulations for more info.
Late submissions do not apply for performances, presentations and other time-based examinations.
Digital
Submission
Information
Please note that as part of the submission process, the University will utilise Turnitin UK to check the authenticity and originality of your work.
Submission Queries
The LCF Digital Learning site includes step-by-step guides to uploading assignments.
If you have any other queries relating to your submission, please use the following email address for help:
If you are experiencing technical difficulties uploading your assignment, please contact the Digital Learning Support team on MySupport.
Anonymous Marking
This assessment will be marked anonymously for Element 1, as it is an examination. Element 2 will not be marked anonymously because the markers will be providing formative guidance during seminars and tutorials and are likely to be familiar with the students’ work. However, internal moderation and all other elements of the assessment process will remain in place for this assignment. This is to make sure the assessment is fair, accurate and consistent for all students.
Publication of Examination Board Results
13/03/2025
You must check your student portal under myAssessments for confirmation of the Exam Board decision.
Course Regulations
The Course Regulations webpages include useful information on the key regulations for your course, such as:
• What happens if you fail a piece of work or miss a deadline;
• What to do if you are ill or have other extenuating circumstances;
• How to avoid plagiarism in your work;
• What to do if you want to appeal an exam board decision.
Material Costs
Work presented for assessment will be evaluated against unit learning outcomes using UAL’s Assessment Criteria. Increased expenditure on materials to realise your assignment will not equate to increased grades in your assessment. LCF provides a broad range of resources to support your studies and to produce work for assessment. However, there are no significant costs that apply to this unit.
