SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Module title:

Climate Finance

Module code:

FINN41515

Assessment type:

Assignment

% of total module mark:

100%

Word limit:

2,500 words maximum

Drawing on relevant economic theories and empirical literature, undertake a causal quantitative analysis to capture the financial implications of climate change. An empirical causal analysis requires you to identify relevant independent, and dependent variables for your analysis. The analysis must also identify the potential endogeneity issues and include the steps undertaken to overcome such issues (e.g., using control variables and fixed effects).

The assignment must use secondary data for the empirical analysis. Qualitative projects are not accepted.

The assignment must follow the structure of an empirical research paper. It must contain the following sections:

a) Introduction

b) Review of literature

c) Data and empirical approach

d) Results and robustness tests

e) Conclusion

You can work on topics such as:

  • How does the volatility of climate change affect the stock prices of firms located in disaster prone regions?
  • Do we observe a rise in property rents in disaster prone regions?
  • Does the threat of “carbon bubble burst” hamper growth of GDP in OPEC countries?
  • Does volatility in climate change threaten the demographics of a region?

These topics are not exhaustive and are for reference purpose only. I strongly encourage you to identify an empirical research question of your own that captures a cause-and-effect relationship. You must submit the dataset and the codes you have used in your assignment alongside the final project.

For further guidance on how to conduct the relevant research and analysis, please refer to the Assessment / Summative Assessment folder on the module’s Learn Ultra site.

Submission instructions

Deadline

Word limit

Written assignments must not exceed the word count indicated above.

The word count should:

  • Include all the text, including title, introduction, in-text citations, quotations, footnotes and any other item not specifically excluded below.
  • Exclude diagrams, tables (including tables/lists of contents and figures), equations, executive summary/abstract, acknowledgements, declaration, bibliography/list of references and appendices. However, it is not appropriate to use diagrams or tables merely as a way of circumventing the word limit. If a student uses a table or figure as a means of presenting his/her own words, then this is included in the word count.

Examiners will stop reading once the word limit has been reached, and work beyond this point will not be assessed. Checks of word counts will be carried out on submitted work, including any assignments or dissertations/business projects that appear to be clearly over- length. Checks may take place manually and/or with the aid of the word count provided via an electronic submission. Where a student has intentionally misrepresented their word count, the School may treat this as an offence under Section IV of the General Regulations of the University. Extreme cases may be viewed as dishonest practice under Section IV, 5 (a)-(x) of the General Regulations.
