Use of AI
The acceptable use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) for assessments in this module is: Level 1 – Minimal.

This includes routine and established use of tools such as auto transcription, spell checkers, grammar check, in accordance with King’s Generative AI: Student Guidance.

Please note that translation software beyond a few words is not allowed - you cannot write sentences/paragraphs in a non-English language first then use translation software to convert into English and copy/paste into your essay.

If you have any questions regarding the use of AI in this module, please ask the module’s convenor(s).

The point of the course is to teach students how to write, how to critically analyse and understand theory. AI may be central to future careers, but will only be helpful if you have an ability to judge its outputs, understand what ‘good’ writing looks like and how to critique AI outputs as well as apply critical thinking more broadly. Therefore we require you to not use AI to write assessments beyond spell checking-type uses.

CW1 – 1,500 Word Essay (0% of total module weighting)

Choose one of the summative questions. The formative assessment should include:
- Full introduction of at least 250 words (as if writing the 2500-word coursework)
- Analysis of 1 case study and at least 1 theory
- Brief bullet points on other paragraphs/sections in the essay
- Conclusion

The purpose of this assessment is to improve your writing style and have a rare opportunity to get feedback on your written work. It is structured in the above style in order to ensure students write with sufficient detail and depth, despite being a shorter length. 800-1500

words is a guide. 1500 words is the maximum amount, but submissions could be shorter.

Submitted essays will then be anonymously shared with the other seminar group and you will mark scripts individually or in pairs. This enables you to

a) Enhance understanding of the feedback that you get from marking

b) Build experience of the marking scheme and what it means

c) Reflect on your own essay and what can improve its marks

The formative and summative assessments can answer different questions – you are not tied to the picking the same for both.

CW2 – 2,500 Word Essay (100% of total module weighting)

This assessment is completed individually. Students will prepare an individual essay in response to one of the following questions. The aim of the essay is for students to demonstrate their understanding of key debates in international development and to critically interrogate these arguments, linking literature together.

Essays must incorporate the materials taught in lectures and the reading lists. Each essay should feature at least two detailed case study from the global south. Essays should also include discussion of at least two key theories taught in the course and incorporate five readings from the reading list.

Answer one of the following questions:

  1. Was Third Wave democratisation a naive mirage, given the trajectory of many of the governments involved?
  2. Are Acemoglu and Robinson right to argue that development can only be sustained by democratically-underpinned inclusive political and economic institutions?
