MAT 167 021 - Applied Linear Algebra
Summer Session 2 2024
Main Objectives: This is a second course in Linear Algebra where we will expand upon ideas from MAT 22A or whichever class you first learned Linear Algebra in. In particular, we focus on both the theory and applications of matrix norms, projections, Modified Gram-Schmidt, and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). We will mainly follow the schedule from the Math Department Syllabus:

Grading Policy: Homework (40%), Quizzes (20%), Midterm (30%), Final Project (10%)
We will use a 10 point grading scale (A 90-100, B 80-90, etc). Pluses and minuses will be determined at the end of the course. I may curve the grading scale down (Ex. A 88-100, B 76-88, etc.) but not up (Ex. A 93-100, B 86-93, etc.) when determining final grades.
Lectures-
• Lectures will be held in person every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
• Typically, the first 10-15 minutes of lectures are time for questions about previous material or home- work before moving on to new material
• Feel free to interrupt the instructor with questions at anytime either verbally or by raising your hand.
• Attendance is not required, but you are highly encouraged to attend lectures and take notes.
• Lecture Notes will be regularly posted to Canvas under Files
• Lectures will be recorded and posted to Canvas
• In event of instructor unavailability (due to illness or otherwise), lectures will be moved to Zoom or a sub may lecture
• Please be respectful to your fellow students by keeping talking to a minimum
Homework-
• There will be 5 total homework assignments worth 8% of your total grade each, one via WebWork and the rest posted to Canvas.
• There will be a list several of WebWorks reviewing MAT 22A material. This is HW1.
• There will be four additional homeworks where you will be completing proofs, doing some small computations by hand, and doing some larger calculations or work via MATLAB.
• Homework will be released each Wednesday night and due following Wednesday night at 11:59pm.
• For HW2-5, you must submit typeset homework solutions.
– LATEXis preferred, but you may use any word processor.
– You may not handwrite full solutions.
– You are allowed to take pictures of neatly handwritten parts of small calculations and incorporate those images as part of your typed solutions.
– The grader will be instructed to mark anything they cannot read as a zero.
• Some problems maybe graded for completion instead of correction. I will not tell you which ones will be for correction beforehand. You are expected to attempt and submit every problem.
You are free to ask classmates for help with homework, especially via Piazza, but you should only submit answers if you understand how to do the problem. There are plenty of great online resources available for learning Linear Algebra and you should feel free to use them. You may not search for specific homework answers online.
Quizzes-
• There will be 5 quizzes worth 4% of your grade each.
• Quizzes will be takehome exams administered via Gradescope.
• More details will be announced in class and on canvas
Midterm Exam-
• There is one Midterm Exam on Aug 30th
• Midterm will be in Normal Classroom at Normal Class Time
• In person attendance is required for Midterm Exam
• You are not allowed to use phones, calculators, or other electronic devices during exams
• A paper exam will be provided with space to write your answers
• You will need to bring your own writing utensil, pencil is heavily preferred over pen
• Additional paper will be provided upon request
• You may turn in your exam and leave as soon as you finish your exam
• After each exam is graded, you will have time to submit regrade requests on individual problems
• Contact [email protected] ASAP if you anticipate an issue attending any exam in person
• There will not be a Final Exam
Final Project-
• You will be put into a small group and expected to work together on a small project the second half of the course
• Projects will include a typed report, coding elements, and an in class presentation
• Typed report must use LATEX
• Coding Elements can use any appropriate programming language (Matlab, Python, R, etc)
• In class presentations must use the Beamer class in LATEX
• More details will be annouceed in class and on canvas
Course Tools:
•Canvas- You can access class discussions in the Piazza tab, annoucements in the Annoucements tab, lecture notes in Files Tab, Homework in Assignments/Files tabs, grades in the Grades/Gradescope tabs, and lecture recordings in the Media Gallery tab. Please read all announcements posted to Canvas.
• WebWork- Your HW1 will be via WebWork. You can access HW1 through the Assignments tab of Canvas.
• Pizza- Class discussion will take place on Piazza. Please post any questions you have on Piazza throughout the Summer Session and answer your fellow student’s questions. Do not post about Quizzes or Midterms on Piazza until told you may do so.
• Gradescope- Gradescope will be used to submit HW2-HW5, facilitate quizzes, see feedback on your Midterm, and submit your Final Project.
• MATLAB- Use of MATLAB will be required for some homeworks. All undergads have access to download MATLAB for free and all students can access it for free using the math department servers.
