Intro Writing Sample: Biologist Identities

This assignment is designed to provide your professor and TAs with a sample of your writing before the course starts. This class is a WI class, and we fully expect that your scientific writing ability will change and grow throughout the semester. Understand that this is a starting point only for your scientific writing. We hope the course will teach you a few basic strategies and techniques that will help you improve your scientific communication skills.

Complete the following assignment. The rubric below will be used to assess your work. Proper formatting of references for Biolab is included in the writing guidelines document posted on Latte.

  • Using the image below, consider and reflect on the multiple identities that scientists and researchers might possess.
  • Pick a scientist you admire associated with the field of Biology or medicine and consider their multiple identities.
    • Project Biodiversify
    • List of 1000 Inspiring Black American scientists
    • List of 100 Inspiring Hispanic/LatinX American scientists
    • Secret Life of Scientists
    • Science makers
    • I Am a Scientist
    • Scientist Spotlight
  • Using at least 3 reliable sources, research this scientist. 
  • Using no less than 12 pt font, write a one, single-spaced page or less wikipedia-like blog post that answers the following questions. The questions are guides to your work and do not necessarily need to be answered in this order.
    • Briefly describe the personal life (childhood, upbringing, family, schooling, home, etc.) of your scientist.
    • Briefly describe the career progression of your scientist.
    • What identity does your scientists possess that you share? How did that identity inform their life or their work?
    • What was the major scientific work or breakthrough with which this scientist was involved?
    • Were there any struggles or challenges this scientist faced either from their peers or from the community? How did they overcome these?
    • How did this scientist affect the field of Biology as a whole?
    • Include a BioRender figure of your scientist or their work that is properly titled, referenced and has a caption. If you have selected the same scientist from
    • Biol18b, you may reuse your figure, but you need to make at least one additional figure.
    • Include a title for your blog entry that is accurate, engaging and formatted correctly.
  • Post your article to the intro writing sample assignment page.
