UNIV*6020 Data Analysis Assignment #1
Due: October 11, 2024

Research Trial Information

An initial varietal trial (late sown, irrigated) was conducted to evaluate the performance of 20 new mustard cultivar compared to four check varieties. The experiment followed a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCB) with three replications. Seed yield (kg/ha) was recorded for analysis. The results of the experiment are provided as below (Table 1):

Data Analysis

Using an RCBD design with both fixed and random effects (mixed model analysis), determine whether there was an effect of the cultivar treatment on the seed weight.
1. Start by entering the data into your program of choice (SAS or R).2
2. Run a mixed model analysis to determine whether there was a treatment effect and a block effect; be sure to include a test to determine whether the random effect in your model is a significant source of variation in thistrial?
3. Compare the means of all treatments using least square means to make all the possible pairwise treatment comparisons. Be sure to state what p-value you areusing.

Report

Your report must include two tables:

• One table showing the results of the mixed-effects analysis (the ANOVA table, fixed and random sources of variations).

• One table presenting the means, their standard errors, and the results of the pairwise comparisons, as described above.

Additionally, your report should include concise, point-form answers to the following questions:
1. Write out the statistical model used in your analysis.

2. What is the null hypothesis for your fixed effect? Based on the F-test results, would you accept or reject the null hypothesis? What conclusions can you draw from this test?

3. Based on the means comparison, identify the treatment with the highest yield. Is the yield of this top-performing cultivar significantly higher than the others?

Note: your tables MUST follow the guidelines set out by Can. J. Plant Sci., or Can. J. Anim. Sci. The tables should standalone, which means we should not need to read materials and methods OR results to understand what is being presented in the table. Review the tables that were presented in lecture or visit the journal website for more information.

CourseLink DropBox submission MUST include:

1. R or SAS syntax [as SAS or R file] and its outputs [as pdf file]- (50% of total mark);

2. Two tables highlighted above (20% of total mark);

3. Answer to three questions listed (30% of total mark);
