Course Information

This is a 3-credit hour blended course based on CIW Database Design Specialist certifi cation exam (1D0-541) that combines on-campus meetings with online learning activities. Students have the fl exibility to attend class on-campus in person or participate in live sessions via Zoom remotely during the class scheduled days and times.

In this class, you will engage in structured on campus and online activities. See the course schedule for a detailed description of activities. This course uses the uCertify platform. You will work in uCertify to review content and complete assignments. Students are responsible for regularly reviewing the course schedule and completing all required assignments. To proceed through this course, you will should log on to D2L and use the link in this course to access uCertify. This way you will see all course announcements, the course calendar, your grades, and any e-mails from your instructor.

Course Description

Students will learn how to plan and design relational databases. Students will learn about the theory behind relational databases, relational database nomenclature, and relational algebra. The course includes sections on Structured Query Language (SQL) and optimizing databases through normalization. Students will apply their knowledge with hands-on exercises designed to teach the intricacies of database design methodology.

Students will also learn how to design, implement and maintain database schemas; design and develop database client applications and components; and perform database administration and maintenance.

Student Expectations

Attendance Verifi cation

You are expected to participate in an academic activity and attend class to be considered “present” in the course. You must attend class and complete an academic activity during the fi rst week of the course, so that it is done before the attendance verifi cation date. The academic activity is usually the syllabus or syllabus quiz or a discussion post. Just logging into the course or sending an email to your instructor will not satisfy the attendance requirement. Like your on-campus courses, if you are reported for non-attendance in a blended course and then withdrawn, you are still responsible for paying for the course. If for any reason you cannot complete the attendance verifi cation requirement before the deadline, make certain to drop the course by the offi cial drop/add deadline or you will still have to pay for the course.

Participation

To succeed in this course, log in and participate multiple times throughout the week (check email, announcements, class discussions, feedback, etc.) so you do not miss critical course information and updates. Additionally, communication with your professor is very important and plays a vital role in your success.

Withdrawal policy

It is your responsibility to withdraw from this course. If you stop participating and do not withdraw by the deadline, you may receive an F.

Computer Knowledge and Skills

By taking a blended course, your computer literacy skills will grow. Some of the skills that you will need at the beginning of the course include:

working knowledge of how to use multiple web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) to navigate the Internet and locate information.

sending and receiving email using your D2L email (within the online course) and your BC email address. You should only use your instructor’s BC email if you cannot access D2L.

file management skills including downloading and saving fi les on your computer, uploading fi les to D2L, and sending email messages with attachments.

Discussion Expectations:

Use the introductory discussion forum to introduce yourself to the class- this will be used as attendance verifi cation during the fi rst week of class.

There are 3 course discussions.

The discussions will be done as part of the live class sessions and will not be graded.

Assignments

Assignments must be submitted by the due dates as specifi ed in your syllabus. The submission of an assignment is your sole responsibility. You should keep an electronic copy of all assignments. Assignment Expectations:

Assignments submitted to the corresponding drop-box will be screened for academic honesty using Turnitin [http://online.broward.edu/d2l/turnitin].

Refer to the assignment rubric and other assignment resources for grading criteria.

Grades will be posted within 7 business days of the assignment due date.

MySQL Class Labs

There are 3 skills based labs that will be done during the live class sessions using ACEIT. If students are not present they can refer to the recorded class session for guidance. It is the students responsibility to complete and submit the lab whether or not they attend class sessions.

uCertify Flashcards:

The Flashcards in uCertify are not required activities in this course and will not be part of your fi nal grade. Flashcards are recommended as a great tool to assist you with reviewing information and may assist with your successful completion of labs and quizzes.

uCertify Virtual Labs

uCertify Labs must be submitted by the due dates as specifi ed in your syllabus. The submission of an assignment is your sole responsibility. You must launch uCertify Labs from the links in D2L. After you complete the lab, you must click the submit button and the close button next to the submit button. Do not click the "X"to close the windows.

There are 15 virtual labs included in the uCertify course.

Each lab has specifi c instructions and requirements.

Virtual labs are manually graded by the professor from the screenshots uploaded to D2L.

Quizzes & Tests

Quizzes and tests may be taken only during the availability dates as specifi ed in the course schedule. Give yourself plenty of time to complete assessments and pay close attention to the time limits. Make sure you have a reliable Internet connection prior to taking quizzes or tests. CIW Certifi cation Exam

The CIW Certifi cation exam is included in the course. Refer to the Final Module for specifi c criteria & information about the certifi cation exam. When you are ready to take the CIW Certifi cation exam, it will be proctored on Central Campus in the testing center. Please make arrangements with your instructor to schedule a testing session.

Late Work Policy

For this course, unless otherwise noted by the instructor, submitting work late will be permitted only under qualifying circumstances and only with prior notifi cation and supporting documentation (original funeral notice, original doctor’s note, etc.). Computer and Internet connectivity problems are not valid reasons for late work. It is the student's responsibility to be technologically prepared to take an online course.
