Background:

The final piece of assessment for FIT 5122 is a recording presentation, a formal written business report and an interview reflecting on your Professional Practice learning (through the readings, activities and assessment items that you have completed).

The assignment:

You will be reporting to your manager regarding a complex professional problem issue in which you present your analysis to your manager in the form of recording.

You will then write a formal business report to a senior executive audience in your organisation addressing the request from your Director below.

At the end you will answer any questions that your manager and senior executive may have in a short interview.

You may not use AI tools for this assignment.

Your task:

You are a senior developer for your organisation and you have been asked by your manager to report on a specific issue that is affecting your organisation currently.

You will be given a scenario and issue. You will analyse the issue and provide your solutions and recommendations to a senior executive audience in your organisation addressing the request with handing over the following:

● A recording to demonstrate your findings and analysis of the problem/s and possible solution to your manager - 4 to 7 minutes - feel free to choose any means/tools (such as root cause analysis) to assist you in presentation recording
● Executive summary - 350 to 550 word (three quarter to one and a half pages)
● Business Report - 1700 to 2500 words (five to seven pages)
● 10 minute interview with Tutor, in the role as senior executive, asking questions about your report and executive summary.

Considering the material covered over the course of the semester in your analysis and investigate if any of the following can be identified in your given scenario:

● Actual or potential ethical or privacy issues
● Actual or potential cultural and team issues
● Actual or potential communication issues
● Actual or potential quality and reliability issues
● Actual or potential presentation and meetings issues
The specific issue for your cohort will be outlined separately and the rubric is available here.

Extensions and late submissions:

Please note, University policy stipulates that no assignments can have a due date during SWOTVAC or the weekend prior. As a result, extensions to the business report due date can only be granted if exceptional circumstances apply. Please refer to the University’s policy on what constitutes special consideration and how to apply. A draft of material prepared up to that point should also be available for your tutor’s consideration if requested.

Late assignments will be penalised 10% per day as per University policy.

Hints for writing a business report versus an essay
● Business reports and academic essays are very different. Their objectives, format and the expectation of the reader are different.
● Business reports focus on the practical application of the theory - providing insights and recommendations rather than explaining the theory itself. They are concise, very practical, usually worded in the first person (I / we recommend… etc) and focused on identifying and solving a problem rather than discussing the theories behind the problem / recommendations.

Using references:

If your business report is based on your own ideas, knowledge or expertise (as many are), then referencing is not required. However, if you are sourcing your ideas directly from others' work or wanting to add credibility to your points by referring to a source, then your sources should be acknowledged and a reference included.

As a business report is designed to be a short and very succinct document, referring to your sources in-text can be done in an efficient and succinct way. For example, you could summarise the key points as follows: “The December 2021 edition of XYZ reports that multicultural teams are x times more likely to fail than……….”. You can also use footnotes.

Turnitin report, collusion and plagiarism:

An integrated turnitin report is required as part of the submission process and can be found in the business report submission link under Moodle / Assessments. Turnitin is a text-matching software that helps students demonstrate academic integrity in their work.

Instructions for using an integrated turnitin report can be found here - https://guides.lib.monash.edu/turnitin/using-turnitin

Please note you can generate an immediate turnitin report before the submission due date. After three attempts, the reports will take 24 hours to generate. The Turnitin report will compare your work against other student papers, the internet, periodicals, journals and publications.

Plagiarism and collusion policies established by FIT and Monash University can be found at: http://www.infotech.monash.edu.au/resources/student/assignments/policies.html
