Importance

In pervasive computing and IoT system it is important to understand the power consumption in wireless devices (sensors and actuators) and how communications and I/O can increase power consumption if not carefully designed.

Learning Objectives

• To understand how power consumption of an MCU is measured as well as how to take into account the MCUs power budget when designing software for the device.

Success Criteria

• To understand how a wireless sensor device consumes power.

Resources

• Design of a Wireless Sensor Network from an Energy Management Perspective paper.

Exercises

You read through the paper “Design of a Wireless Sensor Network from an Energy Management Perspective to be able to answer the following questions.
1. What is the objective of the paper?
2. Table 1 in the paper is an energy budget of the sensor mote. Explain in your own words the interpretation of this table.
3. Explain why there is still current draws when the MCU is in sleep mode.
4. Do a bit of research and explain what Low Power Listening (LPL) mode is. Compare this to Sleep mode?
5. Leveraging the state diagram, Fig. 4, briefly explain the steps taken for a sensor node (not root), when reading sensor data. 6. Based Table 2 which modes of operation consume the most power?
7. Based on Table 3 which consumes most power besides the idle mode over a 5-minute operation interval.
