Paper Proposal Instructions:

Informed by the ways of looking at design as a social practice each week in lecture and modeled by the required readings, students in this course will develop independent research on a topic of their choosing, in consultation with their recitation instructor. At the end of the research process, students will write a 2,500 word research paper that re-examines a design under a new context they think is important to consider for what it reveals about the impact on people, the environment, or the study and practice of design.

The paper proposal should be 150 - 200 words, include 3 - 5 credible sources* (academic articles, case studies, and design critiques, anything on JSTOR or from the library), and 1 - 2 images that will contribute to your paper. The sources should be in Chicago Manual Style. This paper proposal will help you refine your focus and allow for feedback before you begin writing the full paper.

The main goal of this paper proposal is to give an overview of what you plan to study, why it's significant, and how you will approach the research. Your proposal should include:

1. A clear statement of the subject or design you will explore.

2. The central argument or the specific question your paper will address.

3. A brief explanation of why your topic is important or relevant in the context of design studies.

4. A short description of how you will conduct your research (what sources or methods you’ll use to gather information.)

5. An idea of what you hope to find or argue in the paper.

Steps to keep in mind to guide your writing process:
1. Choosing Your Research Topic:
- Select a design or design-related topic that interests you (. This could be a product, system, structure, or any design that has social, environmental, or cultural implications. The topic can be something covered in class or something you’re interested in outside of class, anything you want (that you can find research/credible sources for)!

- Use the frameworks and critical perspectives from weekly materials to help guide how you interpret and analyze the design.

- Consult with your recitation instructor to ensure your topic aligns with the course objectives and expectations.2

2. Conducting Independent Research:

- In addition to drawing on course readings, explore external sources such as academic articles, case studies, and design critiques. This will help you contextualize your design within broader social, environmental, or cultural concerns.

- Your research should consider how the design interacts with people and the world around it, whether positively or negatively so be sure to consider multiple perspectives that can support but also counter argue your own argument.

3. Citing Sources Properly:

- Make sure to cite all your references in a consistent academic style. Citations will be in Chicago Manual Style. Include both course materials and external sources used in your research. Citation instructions are linked under Pages on Canvas.

This assignment will be due 10/3/24 by 11:59 pm to allow for any last minute questions or clarifications during recitation time.
