2. Module aims

This module will provide an in-depth understanding of the broad range of theory, research, and practice in organisational behaviour for the adoption of appropriate policies and leadership styles. This will include understanding individual differences, motivational factors, group dynamics, patterns and negotiation practices which can mediate the functioning of an organisation. The module will analyse a range of case studies to illuminate the different work patterns, practices and behaviour both at individual, group and organisational levels. Students will gain an awareness and knowledge of contemporary issues and approaches to organisational change and development facing organisations. Beyond providing theoretical frameworks, the module will augment skills to prepare students for the work place through communication and team management skills, and through analytical and critical thinking skills.

There are three key assessable learning aims:
• Draw on organisational theories and research in order to analyse practical work place concerns
• Critically examine the relations between individuals, groups and the organisation in everyday life
• Construct coherent and evidence-based arguments drawing on both theory and empirical research on matters concerning the organisational interface

3. What to expect from the classes and the module content?

This module is taught in 3-hour weekly classes which will usually start with a lecture component followed by a seminar-style discussion. The sessions are timetabled for Mondays 11:00-14:00 in G.O. Jones:LG1. Please note that unusually, the semester starts on Wednesday (22 January), which means that we do not have a live session in week 1. Week 1 – Introduction to the module and to the assessment will be pre-recorded and you can watch it in your own time.

Some of you will already have some prior knowledge in organisational behaviour while the majority will be joining us from different subject areas with no prior knowledge. In this MSc level course, we will therefore aim to review basic as well as advanced theories, while also offering opportunities for more in-depth discussion and, importantly, the critical and evidence based application of theory in practice. We will work with seminal as well as contemporary research and you are asked to prepare the key readings each week. You will also be asked to prepare cases and discussion questions.
