CS959, Library Technology and Systems
Assignment 1 Specification: Website Development, Digitisation and Datafication
Aim
The aim of this assignment is to identify and apply the information resources and techniques required to build a digital library and website for a particular topic.
Learning outcomes
After completing this assignment, you will have gained experience in:
· Identifying and meeting information design and organisation problems in a special domain and creating a user journey
· Developing well-structured, usable, accessible websites
· Creating metadata to aid retrieval
· Digitising cultural heritage resources
· Identifying possibilities to add datasets to the website
Brief
a) Students will work in groups of 4-5 people.
b) Each student must contribute equally to the group tasks. There will be peer feedback using a provided form at the end of the semester.
c) Each group will choose a pack of resources on a topic from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to digitise during lab sessions. Each pack contains a range of archival items from a given time period in the history of the SFRS.
d) The group will then decide who is the target audience of their website and create a user journey and respectively will prioritise which items from the pack to digitise. You do not need to digitise all the items. Instead, consider what ‘story’ you want to tell with the items about the time period that your pack covers. Consider how users would interact with your website. You could decide this based on demographic characteristics (for example: age group, historical researchers, Scottish citizens, etc.) Think about what information needs your intended users might have and what you would need to do in order to facilitate meeting those needs, including metadata and website design features. The approaches and strategies to investigate the allocated topic and meet user needs should be included in your written report.
e) Support the story told by your digitised items with related resources from online or the library, and with potentially useful datasets. Consider visiting the Mitchell Library for historical research.
f) You will build the web site using WordPress. Be sure to cite your sources and provide the references on the site. Create the website in the WordPress site provided for your group by CIS Systems Support. Build the site with usability and accessibility in mind.
g) Each digitised archival resource should have its own descriptive metadata expressed in Dublin Core or another appropriate metadata format to facilitate searching.
Marking criteria
50%: Completeness and quality of the website and its metadata.
30%: Reflective written report containing approximately 2,500 words (+/-10%). References
and appendices, if used, do not contribute to the word count. This should include, but may not
be limited to:
· group and individual processes used to complete the tasks
· project management approaches
· problems encountered and solutions implemented with WordPress, digitisation or
· other technical elements
· how you met the needs of your intended users
· how you designed for usability and accessibility
· how you created metadata for findability
· critical reflections on the outcomes of the project
20%: Group presentation. The presentations will be given in the CS959 class slot on Monday 31rd March. The presentation should use PowerPoint or other presentation software such as Prezi including screen shots of the website and the items covered in the reflective report. The presentation should be no longer than 12-15 minutes, with an additional 5 minutes for answering questions. To avoid technical difficulties in class, please email me your presentation slides no later than Friday, 28th March.
Format
The assignment submission will include the following:
1. The written reflective report. Please include the URL to your website in the report.
2. The PDF of your group’s presentation slides.
3. The peer feedback form (to be provided).
Contribution to the overall mark
This assignment constitutes 50% of the marks for this module.
